Take, for example, music.
My (vinyl) record collection consists of a few hundred albums. I have considerably
fewer CDs, simply because discs weren't around when I was building my collection.
I do, however, have numerous boxes of cassettes, and my MP3 collection, though
it consists primarily of digital versions of albums I own, is far from small.
At the moment we have a working turntable in the house, in addition to a working
tape deck, and of course a CD player and computer. I'm in a position to listen
to my entire collection - but I only very rarely even listen to parts of it. There's
so much music available that I haven't heard yet which I'd like to hear. If I
spend my time listening to my collection, I won't have the time to listen to anything
new. The music I know (and love) can very easily become clutter that doesn't allow
new sounds to reach me.
