Perhaps not astray, but not backtracking either.

In the past I've sung the praises of serendipity, even claiming (nine years ago, no less) that only the web-experienced can truly appreciate the joys of getting lost. On a more instrumental note, it was only two years ago that I noted that we can stumble upon addresses, or mistakes in addresses, that can lead to reestablishing contact with old friends. Five and a half years ago I was claiming that serendipity on the web is still possible. Frankly, the examples are a bit too numerous to list them all here, though I suppose that I can't resist noting that eight years ago I prided myself on serendipitously being reminded of how Pooh and Piglet, while tracking a Woozle, again and again followed their own footsteps.

This time around, however, it seems that those footsteps are starting to lead in a different direction. Rather than bringing me back to previously trod territory or praising the serendipitous, I find myself questioning whether that's really what's happening.
