A well established misnomer.


Though we're often told that we should develop better searching skills, what we really want is to become better finders. To become better finders we don't necessarily have to be better searchers, though perhaps more effective searchers would be helpful. It's not that we have to learn to lift every rock to see what's under it, but to be able to view the terrain and determine which rocks are worth lifting, and which worth leaving where they are. If someone tells us that he or she is a very good searcher, able to conduct searches for hour on end, it seems to me that the correct response would be to ask whether he or she ever finds what they're looking for.
