You want it to mean something?

What's all this fuss about wanting links to mean something? In today's internet, readers intuitively understand that a link on a page opens up a different page. Unless the link is part of a hierarchical structure (in which case we have some sort of gut understanding that it will lead us somewhere logical and/or useful) readers who meet links on a page have no reason to even wonder about where a link leads. They don't read the URL in order to get an inkling of what might be ahead, they don't ask themselves if perhaps a surprise awaits them. Links have ceased to be hints, or asides, or invitations, or anything else - they're simply there, and clicking (or not clicking) on them is little more than part of the game.
