We still printed documents back then.

For quite a number of years I've joked that the reason we need printers next to our computers is so that we'll have scratch paper handy. Though I've only encountered one teacher who has whole-heartedly encouraged her pupils (or at least their parents) to send her their work via email rather than printing it out in what seems to be an impressive manner and handing it in, this is becoming, more and more, the norm. The days when we thought that the reason for having a word processor was so that we could produce attractive documents that might give us better grades in our classes, though perhaps not yet over, are clearly limited. And of course since true seamless integration is possible only within a digital framework, a document sent to the printer isn't "finished", it's dead.
