The data aren't exactly consistent.

Back in 2004, a PEW report told us that
In a national phone survey between March 12 and May 20, 2003, the Pew Internet & American Life Project found that more than 53 million American adults or 44% of adult Internet users have used the Internet to publish their thoughts, respond to others, post pictures, share files and otherwise contribute to the explosion of content available online.
A more recent report (from May, 2007) however, paints a somewhat different picture. In this report we learn that only a relatively small percentage of American adults are active users of the interactive aspects of the internet (and cellular phones).

Certainly there's the proverbial apples and oranges problem in comparing the data here, but even after taking that into consideration, it's hard not to get the impression that considerably fewer people are actually involved in Web 2.0 types of internet use than one might think from reading Time magazine.
