Just another semi-eventful day.

No need for a special date tie-in this time. When the computer becomes an integral part of you, you don't have to bend over backwards to find something really fitting. All the pieces seem to fall into place anyway. So perhaps it's proper that the date tie-ins of this month's column bear no direct relation to the topic, and in that way, of course, actually show that they're related.

It was on this day that Oscar Wilde, who has enjoyed extensive quoting in these pages, died. Wilde had attitude. His last words are reported to have been uttered while sipping champagne on his deathbed:

Alas, I am dying beyond my means.

Another quote is often referred to as his last words as well, though apparently they were spoken in the same bed, but about a month before he died:

My wallpaper and I are fighting a duel to the death. One of us has to go.

This day is listed also as the first (or only, depending on the sources you read) reported case of a meteorite hitting and/or injuring a human. The meteorite in question apparently weighed about 4 kilograms, and in 1954 it struck Elizabeth Hodges in Alabama as she was relaxing on the couch of her home.
