Well, at least on my shelves.


Though on the whole I stopped buying books (not to mention reading them) quite a number of years ago, a few hundred volumes still grace the walls of our home. I readily admit that the vast majority of these don't get taken down to be viewed with any frequency, if at all. Yet I need them there. They serve as road signs for my thoughts. Just glancing at the titles will often direct me toward a particular idea that will give direction to my thinking or writing. I need the books in much the way I need a cluttered desk - yes, it's a mess, and yes it should be cleaned up, but many of the items that build that clutter are also very helpful to me in thinking straight. It's as though a cluttered desk is the best route to a clear mind (though I won't go so far as to claim that my mind is really clear).
