It was almost a full ten years ago that I wrote here about the lazy sheep bookmarklet, a tool for automatic tagging. I noted then that because tagging a web page was essentially a way of recognizing that something had meaning to us and thus "organizing" it in such a way that it made sense to ourselves, the idea of automatic tagging seemed to me to be self-defeating. By making tagging automatic we took ourselves out of the process of giving something meaning, and without our specific, even idiosyncratic, take on whatever we were tagging the entire process became ... meaningless. The lazy sheep bookmarklet is still around, though it was designed for use with Delicious which though also still around is probably rarely used anymore. I still don't see the point in the tool, but that doesn't mean I don't have great respect for John Resig, the bookmarklet's creator, who still seems to be going strong, working on interesting projects that I really don't understand.
