Predictably it was while searching for something else, related elsewhere in this column, that I stumbled onto the fact that I'd found the more accurate Joyce quote, and reported on this ... ten years ago. It may be that I became so enamored of the (incorrect) way that I remembered the quote that I didn't remember searching for, and finding, the accepted wording. No, it doesn't really matter, though if I can't remember what I wrote in these columns I guess I can't really expect my readers to do so.
