I honestly don't wish this on anybody
For months I've been collecting materials for this column, and a large part of that process has been reading many of them - both to check how or whether my thinking has changed, and to determine what merits mention in this special column. I admit that that's been enjoyable, but also time consuming. In the past I've quoted (and even forgotten that I've quoted) James Joyce - apparently incorrectly - that he devoted his whole life to writing Finnegan's Wake and that that was the least the reader could do. But he did say something similar to what I've misquoted:
The demand I make of my reader is that he should devote his entire life to reading my works.
Honestly, dear reader, don't do that. Do something more productive.
